I am interested to test the current WA market and will be placing a BRAND NEW copy of each of the above years for sale over this weekend with a starting price of ONLY 1p and without RESERVE.

The response will be most enlightening.

I agree John that will be interesting

What would be more interesting would be if at the same time you put identical lots up on ebay

Naaaah, too hit and miss that John. What you need are some top notch WWII softbacks. Something with a bit of value. That would give a truer indication of which is a better site to list.

Judging by what I have noted recently, successes on WA only transpire when quality is top notch and when the price is very low. I think my offering in this case conforms on both parameters. Anyway, time will tell and I am somewhat reluctant to risk too many of my WW2 linens on this basis. I say this following my most recent experience when a very good '46 linen reached £51 on WA but eventually sold on Ebay for £69 ( plus £4.50 p &p)

I WANT WA TO DO WELL BUT IT NEEDS THE SUPPORT OF BUYERS PREAPARED TO PAY A FAIR PRICE AND SELLERS TO QUIT ASKING DAFT PRICES

Very true John - I might be wrong but I would think there are quite a number of, without wishing to be condescending, semi serious collectors who have been to WA, know its there, but don't bother with it much because they don't have any chance of picking up a bargain - I would think the key must be to concentrate on getting more buyers first - the sellers will automatically follow if the "action" hots up amongst bidders rather than it essentially being a shop, and a pretty pricy one at that

Grimble's right...considering that 2003-2005 can be bought new from Cricshop for less than GBP5 each (or 2004 - 2009 for GBP25.01) I cannot see how listing such items with a 1p reserve proves very much.

I'd be curious to know just how many in the forum (or WA) would actually be on the lookout for a used 2004 HB...or a new one for that matter.

Are WA buyers more discerning than ebay buyers? I think they are, which might be part of the reason for price differences. I mean, on ebay there are 2008 PBs listed at GBP28.47+...an ebay punter might think he's got a bargain if he bought the same for GBP10 on ebay at auction...what would this tell you about ebay/WA price comparisons?

A fair price for the seller is often a very different thing to a fair price for the buyer!

I dont think many people want a 2007 on WA as many are collectors that will have bought one in 2007 when it came out, WA does sell some recent copies but it's be a risk at a penny. JJ how much did your ebay ones sell for, any chance of a link?

I will try a 30s Paperback for 1p on the site this weekend, which may have a bit more of a change to break a quid.

Chris,

I sold a NEW 2003 a couple of dats ago for £7.50 (plus 4.50 p&p)--Ebay no.370328204420.

Not sure how to do link bit, but I am sure you do.

Another suggestion re- this matter:

Could you either endorse a seller's starting price yourself, or, better still bar unreasonable start prices?

I WANT WA TO BE BETTER THAN EBAY!!!!

Chris cant stop people listing books at unreasonable start prices, who can say what is or isnt unreasonable.

It would be good sport if people listed good 1930s SBs starting at a £1 but if people want to start them at £175 thats up to them, if you PARTICULARLY want a good 1930s SB this is good place to come and that is a price worth paying.

The market seems depressed everywhere at the moment. Occasionally I feel a little guilty at times buying things that used to be so much more expensive in the past...but I know it won't last forever.

Jon's point about complete freedom in making starting prices would be all very well if it were not for the fact that so many buyers perceive them as unreasonable.

In turn, I very much regret to say that this can so easily discredit the whole site and I consider this to be more than unfortunate

If sellers start books at completely unreasonable prices then they simply wont sell.

If sellers treat the site more as shop by starting books at the minimum they will accept then that is a pity but there is nothing Chris can do about that.

There are 3 main places I would look first if buying a wisden and WA is one of them.
