Excellent 1938 & 1939 HB's to precede the 40's books listed

John you must be THE specialist '38 hb dealer - you've had loads of 'em (well must be at least 4) - if I didn't know you better ......................................

Quite correct, Martin. Not only have I been well blessed with '38 hb's, but the two that I have at the moment are both excellent in every respect.

However, you may be interested to note the difference in the starting prices between that listed on Ebay and the one placed on WA.

I've been looking for a Benno standard 38 for a while, and have found it to be very elusive.

In all honesty they are not that difficult to find, but so many genuine collectors want the 1938-45s at sensible prices that they hardly ever reach my site.

Surely John logic would suggest that if Bill's 38 hbs never reach his site and they get snapped up earlier that if anything his prices are lower than they could be?

Anyway just out of interest do you discern in the course of your dealings any indication as to the number of hb's around for each of the interwar years?

It does seem to me that 38 crops up at least as often as any other - but I'd be much more interested in the opinions of you two gents

Ditto and Ditto Mr Fertang...

I was about to make the same point, and ask - basically - the same question.

Well gents?

1940 in good shape is the hardest by far. In fact 1940s in nay shape are hardest to find hence the £1500 price tag not the £900 one.

1938 & 1939 in great shape are still not easy to find, they are sometimes touched up as 39s hinges often break. 38 cloth can sometimes get holes. SPien gilt can fade easily. Wisden just didnt use nice materials 38-40.

I stilll need a Benno 1939 & 1940. I owe a member for his top top 38.

1941s although may be rarer than 38/39 (about the same as 40 in experience) , an average 41 is of better quality than an average 38. Hence a benno 41 is very hard to find but if you spot one it is more likely to be a nice one. Spine gilt is the usual issue.

I would say in order of difficulty:

1st Benno 40

2nd Benno 41

3rd Normal 41

4th Benno 38

5th Benno 39

6th Normal 40

7th Normal 38

8th Normal 39

Martin, Chris, Bill & All.

I have been struggling all afternoon with a jungle of wires and connections in order to move my kit inside for the winter. Valerie complains that it is far too cold in my outside barn where all IT gear has been since starting this honest endeavour. However, she is coming up for 70 in January so perhaps I should make allowances.

This is to explain slight delay in replying but to answer questions posed I have to say that '38's in particular have come my way with fair regularity and I have had 12 in all since February 2007 and most have been good/very good with one quite exceptional that was sold into the trade for far more than any private offer received previously. '39's have been far harder to come by and many earlier 30's have been poor sellers by virtue of worn gold-blocked titles. I reckon I have had an average 1.4 copies in the same period for each of the previous years back to 1920. 1918/1919 have been non existent until acquiring the former recently.

I probably misunderstood Bill's remark about not having enough left to sell on Ebay. I thought he meant that he couldn't sell them despite listing them. My apologies anyway

No need to apologise

I tend not to sell pre 49 hardbacks on ebay. I hope noone takes offence by this but I dont want/need to use ebay for those. I agree with the various comments re the 1930s and WW2 hardbacks but I can say with 100% certainty that they are not as scarce as one might think.
